I design human experiences - together with a studio of architects, designers, and artists who share my belief that everything is connected. Objects have agency. Spaces shape behaviour. The physical world is a carrier of meaning. I translate the values, strategies, and visions of the people I work with into tangible experiences that resonate and endure.
We blend experiential design with critical thinking and a deep sense of responsibility. We use the newest tools, concepts, and materials to create encounters that change how people feel and think. My mission is to delight. My vision is a world with less indifference and more meaning.
Every project here grows from partnerships with engineers, craftspeople, researchers, fabricators, and clients who share an ambition to do something that hasn't been done before. Digital technology, material ingenuity, and a commitment to making things both unique and buildable run through all of it.
My practice is grounded in two decades of design research at UCLA, Aalto University's Digital Design Laboratory (which I founded), The Ohio State University, the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and as a co-founder of Ocean North. Research is not separate from the work; it drives it.

Kivi Sotamaa

I am a Finnish architect - designer - artist. I co-founded Ateljé Sotamaa in 2010 and established Kivi Sotamaa in 2025. I am a partner at Vivaret, a design-build atelier dedicated to bespoke timber architecture. I work across scale and media - from houses and public sculptures to furniture, tableware, exhibitions, and identities - for clients who value experiential design, critical thinking, and craftsmanship.
My work has been shown at MoMA, the Venice Biennale, the CCA, and the Vitra Design Museum, and is held in permanent collections in Montreal and Orléans. Earlier in my career, I co-founded the digital design collective OCEAN North, taught at UCLA and Ohio State, held the inaugural Cross Over Professorship in Vienna alongside Prix, Hadid, and Lynn, and founded the Aalto Digital Design Laboratory.
A current focus is timber architecture and combining parametric design with the Compagnons des Devoirs tradition of master carpentry. I am writing a book on architecture as human experience, supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Antti Ahlava My partner at Kissing Helsinki. One of the most curious minds in Finnish architecture — a genius for urban design with whom I have collaborated on projects and competitions for decades. Rain, snow, or shine, Antti rides his bike everywhere.
Fredrik Lindberg My partner at Kissing Helsinki. A sophisticated architect, enthusiastic musician, and master of the trombone. Elegance in everything he does.
